What is the true cost of the dirtiest and most expensive form of oil?
When people think of the tar sands, they think of the draglines and pits of Fort McMurray. But in actual fact the Tar sands spread across all of Northern Alberta, encompassing both agricultural and wilderness areas including Three Creeks and Other areas.
The Tar Sands are a mixture of sand, water and heavy crude. Unlike oil from the Persian Gulf, extraction is very expensive and more harmful to the environment as tremendous amounts of water and natural gas are needed to extract the oil from the open pit mines that can be seen from space.
